Pahachare, Janbahadyah Jatra and Biskha Jatra Observed in Edmonton, Canada

The Nepalese community in Edmonton recently observed Pahachare, Janbahadyah Jatra and Biska Jatra festivals amidst a cultural event at Lansdowne Community Hall on Saturday April 22, 2017. The cultural event was organized by Newa Cultural Society of Alberta (NCSA), a local organization to practice, promote and preserve Newa language, culture and traditions in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

The cultural event was inaugurated by Mr. Janaki Das Ranjitkar, a senior member of the Newa community who recently arrived in Edmonton to visit his family members. The inauguration ceremony was followed by worship of deities such as Lukumadyah (Mahadev), Janbahadyah (Seto Machindranath), Bhairav, Bhadrakali, and Ganesh to commemorate Pahachare, Janbahadyah Jatra and Biskha Jatra cultural festivals. The worship of deities was performed by Mrs. Bejuna Joshi, a senior member of the Newa community in Edmonton.

Earlier, Dr. Hemanta Joshi, President of NCSA, welcomed all the guests and participants in the cultural event. Dr. Joshi briefly highlighted on importance of observing Pahachare, Janbahdyah Jatra and Biskha Jatra cultural festivals in Edmonton. Dr. Joshi also updated on upcoming programs and activities of NCSA in the community and urged their support and active participation in the programs. Mr. Janaki Das Ranjitkar briefly spoke about stories behind celebrating Pahachare, Janbahadyah Jatra and Biska Jatra cultural festivals. He expressed his gratification being part of the celebration and applauded the efforts made by NCSA in promoting and preserving Newa identity, culture and traditions in Edmonton.

In the cultural event, participants were entertained with cultural quiz related to Pahachare, Janbahadyah Jatra, and Biska Jatra cultural festivals. An ethnic potluck dinner was served to the participants at the end of the cultural event.
