“NWGN Congratulates Nepal’s First Woman President of Nepal Bidhya Devi Bhandari”

Boston 11-04-2015 for immediate release

In an unprecedented move, Nepal’s parliament elected the first female President of Nepal, Bidhya Devi Bhandari. Bhandari’s entry into the office represents a historical landmark for the nation, testifying to the emergence of women in Nepal’s public life. President Bhandari has already had a long and distinguished political career, devoted to addressing pressing everyday issues faced by Nepali people.  She started out in 1979, participating in the the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) youth movement. Eventually, she rose in CPN’s ranks and became the party’s Vice Chairperson. In 2006, she led demonstrations against former King Gyanendra, which helped end the monarchy in Nepal. From 2009 to 2011, she served as the nation’s Defense Minister as well. Throughout her long career, she has also advocated for Nepali women.

Her appointment to the Presidency demonstrates the nation’s growing awareness of the need for leaders from both genders. In her new role, she will serve as an inspiration for generations of women to come.  Nepali Women Global Network (NWGN), a group that promotes networking and support among Nepali women, unanimously supports the selection of Bhandari and wishes her the best of luck in helping to lead the Nepal.
